Life on the front line is very stressful and comes with a variety of emotions. I’ve spent over 16 years in the emergency services including over 10 years on the front line, so I understand. It’s also how I got into cognitive behaviour therapy, because it was partly these very situations that led me into recieveing therapy myself. I say partly, because at the end of the day (or should I say at the end of the shift), we’re only human, and we’re subjected to the same pressures as everyone else outside of work too. Health, worry, dependants, finances, grief, family, relationships etc.

We have this inate quality to help people, and that often means we think we should be able to help ourselves too, but this is usually far easier said than done.

While there is no specific therapy for emergency services and front line workers, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy can work wonders, helping us to reframe our beliefs from unhealthy to healthy, turning off the unhealthy emotions, and helping us adopt healthy alternatives.
